Despite the economic times Detroiters know how to give and give BIG!

During Robert Shumake’s Big Give, a donation drive lead by The Robert Shumake Foundation, hundreds of people donated much needed supplies for their neighbors struggling during this so-called “recession.”

At the event held at the Northwest Activities Center, volunteers collected over 22,000 pounds of books, shoes, clothing and medical equipment. The sponsors for the humanitarian effort were Mortgage Auditors of America, Inheritance Capital Group, Jacksonville Urban League, Gary Financial Services, Courier & Fax, the Northwest Activities Center, WGPR and Radio-One.

The coats and outerwear were donated to Greater Grace Temple Church in Detroit. All other items were packed and shipped to the town of Sosua in the Dominican Republic, where the community is desperate for aid. The cost of the donation shipment and aid distribution in the Dominican Republic was underwritten by Mr. Shumake, founder of The Robert Shumake Foundation.

Dr. Robert Shumake continues to challenge the leaders of our community to increase their giving during these desperate times and lead the charge to look beyond the current financial crisis by considering the needs of the less fortunate.

Robert Shumake Provides Toys and Turkeys for Needy Families

The Robert Shumake Foundation along with Radio One, WGPR 107.5 FM Radio, Prince Hall Masons and DPOA (Detroit Police Officers Association) made sure deserving families didn’t miss out on Christmas this year, with the inaugural ‘Toy and Turkey Ball.’ The event was held Friday, December 18th at Seldom Blues Restaurant located at 400 Renaissance Center in Downtown Detroit.

“This was a great opportunity for us to bring the community together and provide for those who are less fortunate,” said Robert Shumake, founder of the Shumake Foundation. “It is our job to provide for those who are unable to do for themselves, especially during the holidays.”

Seldom Blues restaurant accepted unwrapped toys and frozen turkey donations on December 18, 2009 beginning at 11 a.m. from those who werre unable to attend the ball. Donors were encouraged to drive up to the entrance of Seldom Blues for easy curbside service. People did not have to park or leave their cars as long as they were making a drive-up donation.

The toys and turkeys were distributed to a variety of local charities, including: Word of Faith International Christian Center and Operation Get Down.

The ball concluded with an exclusive concert featuring Howard Hewett. Writer, producer and session vocalist Hewett is formerly of the group Shalamar. His top ten hits include “I’m for Real,” “Stay,” and “I Commit to Love.”

The Robert Shumake Foundation strives to promote home ownership, entrepreneurship and education; to provide opportunities for high school students to attend college; to increase the financial stability and independence of all people.

Look beyond the financial crisis by considering the needs of the less fortunate and enjoy some stress relief of your own

The current condition of our economy and the recession is affecting everyone…especially those in Detroit and in Third World Countries. Dr. Shumake has organized a fundraiser as he challenges our community leaders to look beyond the current financial crisis and consider the needs of the less fortunate.

The Shumake Leadership Challenge fundraiser will be held in Detroit on October 17, 2009. This is a good time to complete your fall cleaning projects; clean out closets and storage areas. Mr. Shumake is looking for donations of new or gently used clothing and books, unopened over-the-counter medications, soap, shampoo and other toiletries. School supplies and carpentry tools are also needed.

Those who bring in a donation will be entered into a raffle to win an X-Box 360 or a $500 gift card. So, complete fall cleaning in time for the holidays, get into the holiday spirit of giving, and feel good about the opportunity to help relieve the financial stress of the less fortunate. At the same time you may realize your own stressful financial situation is not so much of a burden.

Shumake’s Leadership Challenge is also seeking volunteers to travel to the Dominican Republic to meet the donation shipment and distribute supplies.

The Shumake Leadership Challenge fundraiser event takes place on Saturday, October 17, 2009; from Noon to 4:00pm; at the Northwest Activities Center; 18100 Meyers Road; Detroit, MI.

Dr. Robert Shumake is an active community leader who works to help the less fortunate. He is also the founder of the Shumake Scholarship Relays, an annual event that takes place in Detroit to help kids get college scholarships.
